1st Gear Driving Academy is committed to offering further training after you have passed your test, and later on should you feel the need to refresh your knowledge prior to accompanying learners. Hopefully you will never be involved in a car accident, but if you or somebody you care about has been, then a refresher/confidence lesson may give you the ability to deal with potentially hazardous situations more confidently and effectively in the future.

  • Pass Plus courses

Pass Plus courses last 6 hours and cover 6 areas of driving which may not have been coverred sufficiently during the regular learning to drive course. I strive to make each course interesting for the individual by tailoring the content to suit the individual, concentrating more fully on the areas that appear to be most beneficial.
The 6 compulsory areas covered are:
City driving, Rural driving, Night driving, All-weather driving, Dual carraigeways, Motorways.
Any of the above with the exception of motorways may well have already been coverred whilst driving on a provisional license and may just need a brief re-cap allowing more time to concentrate on areas of weakness.
Other things that could be included in a pass-plus course where appropriate might include:
Changing a wheel, multi-storey carparks, mapreading and navigation, use of cruise control, plus of course the assesment of any incidents that may have occured during the early days of driving independantly.

  • Motorway Tuition

Rather than complete a full pass plus course I can offer a two hour motorway lesson, which can count towards the pass plus course should you decide to complete it at a later time.
  • Refresher Lessons for Parents / Supervisors

Many of us pick up all sorts of driving habits over the course of time, some good, some not so good! I would be more than happy to spend an hour or two with one or both parents, either inividually or together, before they supervise one of my pupils for private practice. I would aim to help both supervising drivers, and also enable parents to set a good example to the pupils whilst they are driving themselves.

    Post-incident confidence improvement lessons

It is quite normal following a motor accident, or near miss, to feel frightened or anxious about driving, and this normally fades over a period of time allowing you to gradually re-establish your confidence and move on. Together, we may be able to help you to confront and understand the driving issues and help speed up this process.

Anyone involved in a motor accident has exposed themselves to the potential risk of developing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) including fear of driving, avoidance of driving or loss of confidence. PTSD could be the case if you don't seem to be able to move on and get back to normal. I am not a therapist or a doctor and cannot claim to be able to cure this or any other condition, but I may be able to help you confront any confidence issues arrising from being involved in a collision or near miss.

You may want to analyse and understand what actually happened or you may just want to pick up the pieces so that you can feel safe whilst driving again, but I do feel I have the patience, understanding and knowledge to be able to help. This may take just one or two hours, or it could be a longer more gradual process, either way I would do my best to improve the situation you are finding yourself in. These lessons would be charged at the same rate as ordinary lessons, see the prices page.

If you suspect you may be suffering from PTSD there is a really well written advise page from HelpGuide.org (click here) that covers all the aspects of the symptoms, treatment and self help of this condition.
